Build Canada Homes has released their Investment Policy Framework, which will guide their priorities and funding decisions for the next several years.
As a key part of this framework, they’ve included Affordability Thresholds which determine maximum rents for BCH buildings. These affordability thresholds use a methodology that resembles HART’s Housing Needs Assessment Tool, with a few small changes. For example, the categories are slightly different (e.g. Very Low Income consists of 0-25% of median household income instead of HART’s 0-20%), and BCH incorporates 2% inflation every year since 2021. Otherwise, the tables look remarkably similar.
Because BCH of these differences, our HNA will only get you close to the correct affordability for BCH. While do wish they used HART’s income categories exactly, that shouldn’t stop you from getting instant data.
We threw together a spreadsheet that calculates affordability thresholds for all household sizes according to BCH’s instructions.
No math required.
